CHESTER, WV — MOUNTAINEER JUVENILE FILLIES PARTICPANTS FARING EXCEPTIONALLY WELL by Bill Mooney

The growing national impact of stakes races at The Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort is evidenced by the horses who competed in this year’s $85,000 Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies, which was run on August 6, the same day as the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby.

“In a sense, I can’t believe how accomplished these fillies have become,” said Joe Narcavish, Mountaineer’s racing secretary. “But you look at their records, and the results are evident for all to see.”

Change Up, the 4 ½-length winner of the Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies, went on to win the Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs on October 29. She has now won three of five career starts, and her earnings total $160,759.

Appealing Zophie, who finished second in the Juvenile Fillies, immediately went to Saratoga in upstate New York, where she was a 5 ¼-length winner of the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes on September 3. Appealing Zophie also finished fourth in last Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs, and her career earnings now total $295,350.

Meadow Breeze, who was fourth in the Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies, won the Grade 1 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park in New York on September 23. Her career earnings now total $215,969.

And Cohiba Miss, who finished fifth in the Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies, was a 3 ¼-length winner of the $100,000 Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies at Turfway Park on September 30. Her career earnings now total $129,545.

The Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies is a six-furlong event, and its inaugural running occurred only last year. Already, though, it is proving to be a prominent prep race for major events at other tracks.
