CHESTER, WV — Edner "Cherry Bomb" Cherry, 20-4-2 (9 KO's) of Wauchula, Florida will battle Daniel Alicea 30-5-2 (22 KO's) of Camden, New Jersey for the NABF Lightweight Title in a Main Event Fight at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort on August 11 to be televised on ESPN-2.
Cherry is fresh off an 11-round TKO over previously unbeaten Monte Meza-Clay. Alicea is coming off three straight wins including a 2nd round TKO over Juan Gomez, 23-4.
IBA World Lightweight Champion Monty Mesa-Clay, 20-1, (13 KO's) of Rankin, PA will face Dean White, 13-4-1 (6 KO's) of Reston, Va in the co-feature Junior Lightweight bout. Meza-Clay is coming off his first professional loss during which he was stopped in the 11th round by Edner Cherry in a nationally broadcast bout. He fought at a higher weight for that bout, but returns to the Junior Lightweight class for this bout.
White is coming off a draw with (14-0) Nick Cassal in Las Vegas. White only been stopped once in his career, which was six years ago.
Verquan Kimbrough 14-1 (7KO's) of Aliquippa, PA will face Leo Martinez, 8-8 (4 KO's) of Columbus, Ohio in an 8-round Lightweight bout. This marks Kimbrough's first bout since his unsuccessful bid to capture the IBA Featherweight World Championship when he was stopped by Jose Gonzalez. Kimbrough will be fighting at the 135 limit of Lightweight, moving up two weight classes.
Martinez is a very durable opponent who has been stopped only once as a pro. He has a decision win over current IBF World Featherweight Champion Eric Aiken.
A six-round Heavyweight match will pit Brian Minto, 25-1 (14 KO's) of Butler, PA against Andy Sample, 34-13-2 (22 KO's) of Topeka, Kansas. Minto is coming off of two nationally televised wins over Danny Batchelder, 24-1-1, and Billy Zumbrun, 19-6-1. Sample is a bigger man at 6'4", 235 lbs and should be a formidable opponent.
Also fighting will be 2004 Olympic Heavyweight Devon Vargas 9-0 (4 KO's) against a yet-to-be determined opponent.
Rounding out the card will be a female Featherweight bout pitting Leslee "Long Play" Perella, 3-1-1 (2 KO's) against Melinda Woody, 1-1 (0 KO's), of Cleveland, Tennessee.
