CHESTER, WV – Visitors to Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort can view a display that can be described
as not only entertaining and enchanting, but edible as well.
The “Gingerbread Village at Mountaineer” is
constructed of 800 lbs. of gingerbread (all baked by Gus’s
Goodies in Weirton); 500 lbs. of sugar and approximately
200 lbs. of assorted candies. Every item utilized on the
house is 100 percent edible.
Located in the lobby area of the Convention & Conference
Centre, the Gingerbread Village is the result of an employee
holiday Gingerbread house contest in which 43 volunteer
“elves” from different departments at Mountaineer
participated.
During the construction phase, employees exercised their
creativity; stretched their imaginations and consumed 279
Christmas cookies and 24 ½ gallons of Starbucks coffee.
The village is 342 square feet with eleven houses; a train
station and center of the village (designed and constructed
by Executive Chef Phil Sassaman); a Christmas Edition Lionel
Train set with 28 feet of track; an ice skating rink in
the center; 19 feet of ski lift and 200 Marzipan figurines.
Snow mountains are composed of 45 lbs. of Royal icing with
hard candy and Styrofoam.
Winning the “Best All Round,” “Most Festive”
and “Most Traditional” honors was the Count
Drop Team at Mountaineer for the North Pole. Capturing Most
Creative honors was the Jefferson School Building, built
by the Human Resource Department, with the Most Traditional
honor taken by the Snoopy’s Wonderland, built by the
Banquets/Culinary Department.
“We invite the public to stop by and enjoy Mountaineer’s
Gingerbread Village,” said Tamara Cronin, Mountaineer’s
Director of Public Relations. “Our employees demonstrated
tremendous creativity and had a great time constructing
the village. In fact, they’re already planning for
next year!”
