CHESTER, WV - CHESTER, WV – “Alex’s Lemonade
Stand” will raise money for pediatric cancer research
at the West Virginia Derby on Sunday, August 14. Named in
honor of Alexandria “Alex” Scott who succumbed
to neuroblastoma last August, the lemonade stands were launched
by Alex at age four to help raise money for her doctors
to cure cancer. Since then, the effort has been embraced
by racetracks throughout the nation and more than $1.8 million
has been raised and donated to research hospitals.
The owners of Afleet Alex have pledged a portion of their
winnings each race to Alex’s lemonade stand and all
of the horse’s merchandising material bears a lemon
logo representing the charity.
Alex’s mother, Liz Scott, arranged with Churchill
Downs to have a stand opened at the track for the Kentucky
Derby and raised $11,000. Two weeks later, Pimlico had a
pair of stands for the Preakness and raised another $18,000.
“Mountaineer is pleased to participate in this fundraising
effort, on our premier racing day, ” said Tamara Cronin,
Mountaineer’s director of public relations.
The lemonade booth, constructed by Mountaineer carpenters,
is a replica of that same childhood lemonade stand used
by Alex. It will be open from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. and
will be located on the apron area directly outside the south
end of the grandstand.
“Youngsters from the area will staff the booth,”
said Cronin, “and the lemonade will sell for 50 cents
a glass. We will, of course, be happy to accept any amount
patrons might want to donate to the cause.”
