CHESTER, WV - CHESTER, WV – Three Hancock County graduating seniors have been named recipients of the Mountaineer Futures Scholarship. Emily McCall of Oak Glen, Corey Zarnoch of Weir High and Mario Barnabei of Madonna will receive the $1,000 per annum scholarship funded by Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort. McCall, daughter of Bill and Beverly McCall of Newell, will attend West Liberty State College and major in business and accounting.

McCall served as treasurer of her class and as a computer lab assistant and was a member of the Culture Club, Foreign Language Club, Pep Club and the Key Club. She was named Lions Scholar of the Month and participated in “Dollars for Scholars.” McCall volunteered her time delivering groceries to the elderly and was employed at the Chester Sparkle Market during her high school years.

Zarnoch, son of Charles and Myra Zarnoch of Weirton, will attend Syracuse University to study communications with an emphasis in public relations.

Zarnoch served on Student Council and attended Boy’s State, Boy’s Nation and Camp Horseshoe Senior Leadership Camp. He was an essay winner in CNN’s “Behind the Scenes” and was named an All American Scholar, National English Merit Winner and Academic Games medal winner. Zarnoch volunteered his time tutoring and working charity basketball and bingo games. He was also employed at Undos and Cold Stone Creamery.

Barnabei, son of Robert & Joann Barnabei of Weirton, will attend West Virginia University where he will major in business management prior to pursuing his law degree.

Barnabei served as class president, newspaper and yearbook editor, JETS captain, Quiz Bowl captain, Interact secretary, SADD secretary, Debate Team captain and Prom Committee President. He volunteered his time working for the City of Weirton and the Millsop Community Center. He was also employed as a parking attendant at the Civic Arena and as a referee at the Millsop Community Center along with being self-employed as a disc jockey.

Mountaineer established the Mountaineer Futures Program in 1998 to assist graduating seniors at each of Hancock County’s three high schools. Recipients must be planning to pursue a degree in a field consistent with Mountaineer’s general business objectives. Unique to the program is the opportunity afforded recipients to acquire summer employment in their field of study at Mountaineer as they work towards their degree. Upon achieving their degree and meeting scholarship standards, recipients also have the opportunity to continue their career with a job in their chosen field at Mountaineer.

Ted Arneault, Mountaineer president & CEO, says the Mountaineer Futures program is advantageous to both the recipient and to Mountaineer.

“Scholarship recipients not only receive financial assistance while in college, they get a jump start on their careers with summer employment in their field of study,” said Arneault. “And, upon achieving their degree Mountaineer has the opportunity to acquire an employee whose job experience and education are an asset to our business.”

“Too many students graduate from college and have to leave home to find employment in their field of study,” said Arneault. “We want to give them a reason to come back to Hancock County to build a life for themselves – and we want to make sure Mountaineer has access to employees who possess both the education and desire to help grow our business.”

To date, two scholarship recipients who completed their college education have returned to work at Mountaineer. Andre Barnebei is employed as Recruiting Manager while Holly (Robinson) Justice is employed as a Hospitality Systems Manager.
