CHESTER, WV - “America,” the Grammy award winning
group that captured Best New Artist accolades in 1972, will
appear in concert at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort on April 13. The light folk-rock act rose to popularity
in the early Seventies with its debut hit, “Horse
With No Name.”
“America” was formed in the late 1960’s
by three high school students, all sons of U.S. Air Force
officers stationed in the United Kingdom. Vocalists/guitarists
Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Gary Beckley perfected a sound
that recalled the acoustic numbers of Neil Young. The group
hit the British charts before charting in the United States.
“Horse With No Name” charted number 3 in the
United Kingdom in 1972 prior to hitting number one in the
United States. “I Need You” and “Ventura
Highway” quickly followed and in 1975 “Sister
Golden Hair” became the group’s second number
one single .
In 1976, original group member Dan Peek left the group to
become a contemporary Christian recording artist. The group
continued as a duo and returned to the charts in 1982 with
“You Can Do Magic.”
Tickets for the concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the
Grande Ballroom, are $35 – Gold and $25 – Reserved
and can be obtained through any Ticketmaster location or
on site at Mountaineer at the Roarin’ 20’s Frequent
Player Department in the Downtown Speakeasy.
