CHESTER,WV – “The Legends of Motown” bring The Temptations, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and The Marvelettes to Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort on September 16.

The anointed standard-bearers for the Motown sound, The Tempations bring breath-taking harmony and stylish choreography to the stage. With hit tunes that have become woven into the fabric of pop music’s tapestry, The Tempations will recall the magic of the 1960’s with “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” “My Girl” and “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” and bring back the scenes of the 1970’s with “Poppa Was A Rollin Stone,” “I Can’t Get Next To You” and “Superstar.”

Martha Reeves began her career as a blues singer with the name Martha LaVaille. In addition to her singing, she performed duties as executive assistant to Berry Gordy, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson. When a backup group failed to appear, Martha called her former singing partners, the Del-Phis. A demonstration record by the group, “I’ll Have to Let Him Go,” caught Gordy’s attention and Martha and the Vandellas were born.

In 1964, “Dancin In The Street” hit number one and “Nowhere to Run,” “I’m Ready for Love” and “Jimmy Mack” were soon to follow.

The Marvellettes occupy an esteemed place in the history of American popular music as the group that caused Motown and Berry Gordy to change the label’s focus from single bluesy soul artists to a smooth orchestrated sound that transcended the prior racial limits of rhythm and blues.

During the their rein at the top of the charts, The Marvelettes turned out a dozen hits, eight of which went Top Ten. Their first record, “Please Mr. Postman,” sold 3 million records in a crossover market with “Don’t Mess With Bill,” “When You’re Young and In Love” and “Beechwood 4-5789” soon adding to their list of hits.

The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will be located in The Harv. Tickets are $60 – Gold, $40 – Reserved and $20 – General Admission and are available through all Ticketmaster locations or on site at Mountaineeer at the Roarin’ 20’s Frequent Player Department.
