CHESTER, WV – The greatest soul group of the early
70’s, The Spinners, will appear in concert at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort on July 22.
With a lush, seductive
sound that defined Philly soul, The Spinners were only high
school students in a Detroit suburb when they formed as The
Domingoes in
1957. The original group featured Bobbie Smith, Pervis Jackson, George Dixon
and Billy Henderson. The groups first single, “That’s What Girls
Are Made For,” became a Top Ten R & B hit in 1961 and featured Smith
on vocals. Following its release Dixon was replaced by Edgar “Chico” Edwards.
By
the late-sixties Edwards had been replaced by Phillipe Wynee who had sung
with Catfish and Bootsy Collins. The group had also evolved
into the Spinners
and had recorded “I’ll Always Love You” and “Truly
Yours.” The
group’s crossover success came in 1970 when Stevie Wonder gave the
group “It’s
a Shame.”
In 1972, Motown released the Spinners and they signed with
Atlantic records. Under the guidance of producer Thom Bell the group developed
a tight rhythm
section with sultry horns and a slight funk underpinning. Wynne quickly
emerged as a
first-rate soul singer and they became the top soul group of the 70’s
topping both R&B and pop charts with songs like “I’ll Be
Around,” “Could
It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” “Rubberband
Man,” and “You’re Throwing a Good Love Away.”
The
concert will be located in The Harv and it begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are
$60 – Gold,
$40 – Reserved and $20 – General Admission and can be obtained
through any Ticketmaster location or on-site at Mountaineer at the Roarin’ 20s
Frequent Player Department.
