A full day of activities will be featured at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort for the 31st running of the West
Virginia Derby on August 9. The Derby will be telecast live
on ESPN and ESPN International for the first time this year
with the race card and festivities being held during the day
to accommodate network broadcast schedules. The East Liverpool
band will perform the National Anthem as the race card gets
underway at 2 p.m.
The $600,000 Derby, the richest race in West Virginia, will
be seen by an anticipated 750,000 viewers. Post time for the
West Virginia Derby is 5:15 p.m.
Those attending the Derby will not only have a chance to see
the premier race in West Virginia, they’ll have the opportunity
to experience what riding a race feels like. A 3-D motion theatre
race simulator will be on site near the Grandstand and will
be available to those in attendance free of charge.
Adding to the excitement will be a drawing by Coke and IC
Lite for weekend packages at Mountaineer. The drawings will
take place immediately after live racing ends.
A festive mood will be set with a roving Dixieland Band from
1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The festivities will continue following
the live racing with Route 45, a country western band, performing
on the Grandstand Deck area from 6 p.m. – 11 p.m.
